This Page is Dedicated to
Walt Pratt - WIN #1364

On May 9th, 2004, 7:16 a.m.  Walt was murdered on hwy 128, north of Moab as he left his truck by the Fisher Towers Rd. to go fishing.  Witnesses called police & the suspect is now awaiting charges in the Grand County jail, Utah.  Messages to his family can be e-mailed to Walt spoke to them so frequently & favorably about his WIN family.

For more information on Walt's murder, please read the article in the Salt Lake Tribune.  (Give it some time to load)  There are photos of the man that did this.  Below is a letter written by Walt's niece.  Below that are some photos that she sent of Walt's family.

To the entire WIN family,

I wanted to drop a quick note to tell your entire group "THANK YOU!"  I am Walt Pratt's niece, Christine, and we are very saddened by the loss that we all are sharing.

First, to update you - Graham Austin pled guilty today to First Degree Murder (in order to avoid the death penalty) and will be sentenced during a hearing to be held on June 29th.

Second, and most importantly - for everyone that sent an email to my parents (or mail to my grandmother), thank you!  I hope you don't mind, but we used two quotes that were sent in those emails (one from Walt Whitman and the other from HS Rice) on the picture boards we made to share a few of our memories of Walter, and I am enclosing some pictures of our family from this week, so you can meet a few others who were near and dear to his heart.  I just had to get online and learn more about your group - he really loved you guys!

My parents (Roy and Dixie) are in the process of answering everyone's email and we were all truly touched by your sentiment.  Walter had so many, incredibly wonderful friends in your group and our entire family is truly grateful for your love and support.  Thank you for opening your hearts to Walt, and to us.

Take care - and please be safe!

The following are two poems that were read at Walt's funeral service.

There is no night with a dawning.
No winter without spring.
And beyond death’s dark horizon
our hearts once more will sing.
For those who leave us for a while
have only gone away,
Out of a restless, careworn world
into a brighter day.
Where there will be no partings and time is not counted by years –
Where there are no trials or troubles,
no worries, no cares, and no tears.

H.S. Rice

The past and the present wilt.
I have filled them and emptied
them and proceed to fill
my next fold of the future.
I depart as air, I bequeath myself to
the dirt to grow the grass I love.
If you want me again,
look for me under your bootsoles.
You will hardly know who I am
or what I mean, but I shall be
good health to you nonetheless.
Failing to fetch me at first,
keep encouraged,
missing me one place, search another.
I stop somewhere, waiting for you.

Walt Whitman
