are going to DO the Dakotas this summer. Up the east side and down
the middle of both states, kicking off to the Badlands/Black Hills
for a couple of weeks then up the west side. We will then go into MT
and catch the beginning of the fall kayaking circuit. Starting at
Yankton, SD around Memorial Day and ending at the MT gathering
mid-Aug. Anyone wishing to come along or meet us at various points
is welcome. It will be much like the NM Sundowner last summer. We
are going to be near lakes and rivers for a little kayaking along

Note: It is highly inadvisable to take NE Hwy 121 across Gavin Point
dam and the "squishy" road through the road construction

On Hwy 87/Main St. turn right onto 1st Ave. Continue on to the
yellow blinking light—Hwy 191 turn right and go 1 mile to the

Historic Trail Interpretive Center, C.M. Russell Museum, Ulm Pishkun
State Park-Buffalo Jump, Museum of the Arts and Giant Springs
Heritage State Park. Staying at Montana Expo Park—take Hwy. 87/89,
turn north (rt) on Truck Bypass or 57th St. bypass just before
entering Great Falls. Stay on bypass until 9th St. N. Take a
right, cross the bridge, and turn left at Smelter Ave. Follow
Smelter (turns into 3rd St. NW) until Northwest Bypass intersection,
take a right. Fairground on your left.

visit Wild and Scenic Upper Mo. Visitor Center, historic downtown,
Museum of the Northern Great Plains and Shop. Staying at Chouteau
County Fairgrounds/Canoe Park.
Jul 19-26 BIG SANDY, MT LCTC
Host Carolyn Baird #2555. Coldbanks Landing is the
primary put-in on the Upper Missouri Wild and Scenic
River. This 47-mile section to Judith Landing includes the
famous "White Cliffs". We will be camping and hiking
along the way. Dogs and cats will need sitters or be kenneled
depending on the weather.
Jul 16-26 GLACIER NAT’L PARK, MT LCTC

Sightseeing through the park. Parking will be at Emery Group
Campground (FS). Take 89 N to Browning. Turn W. on Hwy 2 to
Martin City. Take the road S to East Hungry Horse Dam, approx. 6
miles to Emery Campground.

campfires, dine outs. Rodeos, night shows, parades, 3 free
breakfasts, midway, carnival, melodrama, trolley rides, Capital Bldg
tours, Indian village, Thunderbird show, Ft Warren opera house,
dancing, walking tours. Directions: from I-80 take College Dr, exit
#364, N on Hwy 212. At 1 st
stop light (12th
St) turn left, it becomes Nationway. Follow that to VFW 1881.
Address: 2816 Nationway. Ila will be parked there from mid-July thru
the end of July.
Jul 26-Aug 1 LOLO PASS, ID LCTC
Host: Marie Williamson #1407. Parking at Lumberjack
Saloon. Lolo Hot Springs, Travelers Rest Visitor Center, kayak on
the Bitterroot River. Located in a tiny mountain valley so should be
cool. Come full/empty. Dump, water, propane at Centex gas station in
Missoula about 2 blocks south of Exit 101 on I-90 (Reserve St./Hwy
93). Then you can continue south on Reserve for a couple miles, turn
right on Brooks, and continue to town of Lolo. Take Highway 12 at
Lolo and drive west (toward Idaho) to MM 15+. Turn right (north)
onto Graves Creek Rd. This is a narrow, dirt road and from Lolo you
will be turning right onto it, so go slow and watch for WIN sign.
The Lumberjack Saloon is 2.1 miles up this road. $40/week.
Aug 1-4 KAMIAH, ID LCTC
Host: Adelle Adams #885. Those who want to travel into
the mountains on the Lewis and Clark Motorway and tent for 1 night
will proceed directly to Kamiah, ID. We will depart in
high-clearance vehicles (no pets) on Aug 2, return to Kamiah on Aug
3, and continue to Lewiston on Aug 4.
Aug 1-4 HWY 12 to LEWISTON, ID LCTC
Host: Adelle Adams #885. For those not tenting, the
two-lane road between Lolo Pass and Lewiston (173 miles) should be
driven slowly to enjoy. It includes a 71-mile stretch of constant
curves alongside the Lochsa, Selway and Clearwater Rivers. You will
receive a handout of Lewis and Clark and Nez Perce Indian points of
interest by MM, places to boondock alongside the rivers, and RV
parks.
Aug 4-8 LEWISTON, ID LCTC
Host: Adelle Adams #885. Nez Perce County Fairgrounds,
1229 Burrell Avenue, Lewiston, ID 83501. In August, the Clearwater
River valley and Lewiston temperatures are usually in the 100s. To
reserve an electrical hookup at the Nez Perce County Fairgrounds
(they have 50+ spaces with electricity) in Lewiston, Idaho, email
Jan Allredge, Fairgrounds secretary, jan@npcfair.org, with dates of
stay (4 nights: in on Aug. 4; out on Aug. 8), length of rig, number
of slide-outs, your name, address, cell/telephone number, and credit
card # (will not be charged until arrival). From US 12, turn south
on 21st Street. 21st Street will proceed uphill and become Thain
Grade and then Thain Road. Proceed southeasterly to Burrell Avenue
and turn east. Arrive early; stay late. Nez Perce Visitors Center,
Hells Canyon jet boat.

Aug 8-10 TRI-CITIES, WA LCTC
Hosts: Dee Turner #2771, Sandy Jackson #2658. We
will camp at Hood (COE) Park which is located at the confluence of
the Snake and Columbia Rivers. From Hwy 124, near the jct with Hwy
12, turn onto Hood Park Rd. The weather is likely to be very, very
hot at this time so electrical hook-ups will be greatly desired.
Hood Park has electric, showers, water, grass and a dump. The price
will be $20-25/night and reservations should be made as soon as
possible after the park opens Apr 1. These spots fill up fast!
Reservations can be made at www.recreation.gov or at 877-444-6777.
There is a small overflow area for latecomers at approx $10/night
(w/o electric). Proposed activities: Sacajawea State Park and
Interpretive Center at the confluence of the Snake and Columbia:
information pertaining to the Corp of Discovery and their reception

Trail to view pictographs... etc... and relaxing.

Aug 19-27 ASTORIA, OR LCTC
Host: Bill Gott #3046. We have the Clatsop County
Fairgrounds until the 26th. Parking fee - $5 per night boondocking-room
for about 40 rigs. Parking fee - $25 per night w/water and elect
only. Recommended to have holding tanks empty and fresh water full.
Fort Clatsop: guided kayak trips on the river are limited to 10
people so I have arranged 2 trips. I need to know who wants to go on
the guided trips; third person interpretative events at the Fort;
movies; guided river walk; visitors center; and, surrounding area to
learn how The Corps of Discovery lived in 1805-6. Fort Stevens:
guided kayak trips on Coffenburry Lake are limited to 9 people so I
have arranged 2 trips. I need to know who wants to go on the guided
trips; wreck of the Peter Iredale, beach walks, wild life viewing,
WWII military installation, views of the mouth of the Columbia. Cape
Disappointment Lighthouse and Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center:
Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center has the only items from The
Corps of Discovery in this area; view of the mouth of the Columbia
from the Washington side; north of Cape Disappointment is North Head
Lighthouse open to public for tours; ship wreck. Seaside and Return
of the Salt Makers: first person reenactment of the production of
salt for The Corps of Discovery return trip. Astoria: farmers market
on Sunday; Astoria Column; Columbia River Maritime Museum; Liberty
Theater; Flavel House. Tillamook Cheese Factory: one day trip down
the coast to see the factory and taste some ice cream.
RANGER GUIDED KAYAK TRIP ON THE LEWIS AND CLARK
RIVER
This kayak trip will be approximately 2 miles and 3 hours in
length. The trip will include several stops for explanations about
how the Corps of Discovery used this river (formerly the Netul
River) and Netul Landing during their stay at Fort Clatsop from
December 1805 until March 1806 when they departed for their return
trip home. There will be a 10-person limit for this guided trip
(imposed by the Park Service). Their recommendation is to have
reservations before the end of July to be included on this
first-come-first-served trip. It would be nice to have an all-WIN
trip, so please contact Deannie early. To be included on this kayak

Sep 1-8 ELKTON, OR
Host wanted. The 8th annual "Fort Umpqua Days".
Directions: At the Jct of OR state highways 38 & 138 (take Drain
or Sutherlin exit off I-5) you will find the town of Elkton. Elkton
Community Education Center (ECEC) is just west of the grade school.
We will boondock along the banks of the Umpqua River. Easy launching
for the kayaks! Plenty of biking and hiking trails or just relaxing
along the river under the huge shade trees; water is available; the
Elkton RV camp has a dump $. The 3-day Festival begins with a Sat.
morning parade which ends at the ECEC. Many shows are planned,
including Mountain Man demos, the butterfly pavilion, a fun pie
auction, and hopefully "Cowboy Bill" will be returning
with songs and entertainment. Lots of local food and craft booths,
including wine tasting from the area wineries. A pageant
produced/acted by the locals will be put on both Sat. and Sun. There
is an old car show and a display of beautiful quilts with one being
auctioned off. Two years ago the ECEC began the rebuilding of the
original fort constructed by the Hudson Bay Co over 150 years ago.
Some of our WINers have peeled a few logs for the volunteers to use.
The fort, festival grounds and our camp are all adjacent to each
other and within walking distance. We have a large field for parking
with no fee, but we will collect donations for the ECEC. It is OK to
come early and stay late, so join in a fun gathering.
